From the petition:

On October 9, 2025, the Herald Mail published an article about an upcoming "Open House" by a local Islamic Center. This event was meant to foster community understanding and dialogue, offering insight into Islamic culture and traditions. However, the initiative faced unexpected backlash when Michael Guessford, a member of the Washington County Public Schools Board of Education, commented on the related Facebook post with the phrase, "We need to protest."

As a leader and influencer within our education system, Mr. Guessford's stance is deeply concerning and casts a shadow over the principles of inclusion and respect that we strive to instill in our schools. It is unacceptable for someone in a position of educational authority to incite discord and promote a narrative of division, particularly through expressions that may lead to hate or xenophobia.

Educational leaders should embody exemplary values that promote harmony, understanding, and respect for all communities. Mr. Guessford's actions contradict these values and undermine the trust placed in the Board of Education to guide our children towards becoming empathetic and informed citizens.

His comments do not reflect the ethos of our diverse community in Maryland, nor do they serve the interests of the educational environment we are committed to maintaining. It is imperative that members of the Board of Education uphold standards of conduct that model equity, inclusion, and acceptance.

This petition calls for the immediate resignation or removal of Michael Guessford from his role within the Board of Education. We must ensure that our educational leaders are champions of unity, community, and constructive dialogue.

Join us in demanding accountability and support the call for change to secure an inclusive and respectful future for our students and community. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and advocate for a leadership that reflects our community's values.

Guessford must not be elected president or vice president

At its next business meeting on December 9, 2025, the Washington County Board of Education will conduct its annual board reorganization and elect a President and Vice President to lead the board for the 2026 calendar year.

The current Vice President, Michael Guessford, has made anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, xenophobic, and religiously bigoted posts and comments on Facebook.

According to BOE President Dr. April Zentmeyer, the board “is committed to serving and supporting all of our students, staff, and families, regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs.”  Mr. Guessford, however, clearly has prejudices regarding the backgrounds and beliefs of some of Washington County’s children and their families.

Therefore, Mr. Guessford should not be elected by his fellow BOE members to serve in a leadership position on the Board.

CALL TO ACTION:
  • Please contact Board of Education members as soon as possible before December 9 to strongly encourage them NOT to elect Mr. Guessford to any leadership position.
  • Please consider speaking during public comment at the December 9 meeting.
NOTE: At the reorganization meeting, public comment may occur AFTER the vote has been taken, so be prepared to thank them for doing the right thing or admonish them for giving Guessford a leadership role.
  • Please consider attending the December 9 meeting holding an 8 1/2” x 11” sign opposing his election.

Mr. Guessford’s personal views do not reflect the values of Washington County. This is not a First Amendment issue. Mr. Guessford has the right to express his views. Mr. Guessford’s right to speak, however, does not make him immune to consequences.

Mr. Guessford’s election to a leadership position would mean that board members condone his bigotry and agree with his xenophobic views and would be an embarrassment to our county.

Speak at the next BOE meeting.
Attend the next BOE meeting.
8.5" x 11" signs are permitted.
