IMMIGRATION WATCH
|
WCI Immigration Watch focuses on three strategies to fight back against authoritarianism and protect our neighbors: ADVOCACY, ACTION and COMMUNITY CARE.
Indivisible means standing up for each other, particularly for those who are most vulnerable to the current administration’s attacks on our basic, fundamental rights. The administration's Project 2025, as explained by Heather Cox Richardson, is fulfilling its promise of mass deportations. What we're "watching" (and doing) now:
|
ADVOCACY
WCI Immigration Advocacy is centered around the campaign to ban the use of 287g Agreements statewide. While that effort failed to pass during the Maryland 2025 session, Senate President Bill Ferguson is backing efforts to introduce legislation to ban these agreements when the General Assembly reconvenes in 2026. We believe 287g Agreements do more harm to our communities than good, as explained in this piece from the Frederick County Indivisible Coalition. Be sure to stay engaged as this legislation moves forward.
ACTION
WCI Immigration Action supports our community and our advocacy partners, such as CASA and ACLU, who have been fighting on behalf of immigrant communities for decades.
ACTION you can take today to show support for our immigrant community:
COMMUNITY CARE
The fear and trauma induced by ICE activity remains long after a scene quiets, whether anyone was detained, or not.
WCI Immigration Community Care is modeled after the Montgomery County Immigration Resource Center's (MoCo IRC) successful efforts to support ICE impacted families.
We focus on assisting families with children that have lost their sole source of income by first assessing if there are any immediate needs and then connecting the families with local resources. What we have found is a vast network of groups offering services and products of all shapes and sizes to help families with children. We are currently assisting one Hagerstown family that was referred by MoCo IRC.
