GENERAL INFORMATION:

Who votes in the Primary

Registered Democrats and Republicans vote in their respective party’s primary to decide which candidates will represent their party in the November general election. Both party primaries also include the nonpartisan school board race.

Unaffiliated voters and third-party voters can vote in the primary but will receive a ballot for only the nonpartisan school board race.

Changing your party or selecting a party

Unaffiliated voters have until June 2, 2026, to select a party if they wish to vote in the Democrat or Republican primary. Voters who want to change from one party to another before the primary have the same deadline.

To change your party affiliation, use
Maryland's Online Voter Registration System (OLVR) or submit a new voter registration application or a written request to your local board of elections.

The nonpartisan school board race

Three school board seats are up for election in November. Seven candidates have filed for the nonpartisan school board race. Vote for up to three in the primary. Nonpartisan means there is no D or R next to the candidate’s name to indicate party affiliation. The primary election determines which six of the seven candidates will appear on the general election ballot. Unaffiliated voters and third-party voters can vote in the primary for the nonpartisan school board race.

Unaffiliated/Independent Candidates

One candidate for commissioner, Taj Smith, is not affiliated with either party so her name will not appear on either party’s primary ballot. If she collects enough signatures on her candidacy petition her name will be included on the general election ballot in November. Contact Taj if you'd like to sign her candidacy petition.

The Democratic Primary for Washington County Commissioner

There are eight Democrat candidates listed on the primary ballot for commissioner. In the primary, registered Democrats vote for up to five of the eight candidates. The top five will appear on the general election ballot. But…
  • Three of the eight Democrats have left the race: Samuel Briskin, Chris Keane, and Patrick Kirby.
  • The three decided to end their campaigns after the withdrawal deadline so, even though they have dropped out of the race, their names will still appear on the primary ballot.
  • Democrat voters will still need to pick the five candidates they want in the general election from a list of eight names. The five remaining active candidates are: Jonathan Fish, Les McIntosh, Sr., Teri Pailen, Lara A. Shepherd & Dave Williams.

Mail-In ballots

Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by or before 8:00 PM on Election Day, Tuesday, June 23. However, due to postal operations, the postmark date does not always correspond to the date on which the Postal Service first accepted possession, so every mail-in voter who wants to use the US Postal Service should mail early. The other option is to use a Ballot Drop Box. Ballots must be placed in a drop box by 8:00 PM on Tuesday, June 23.

If you're not comfortable returning your ballot by mail, use a Ballot Drop Box at one of these locations:
